A funny thing about the carrot myth-- this was actually deliberately perpetuated by British intelligence during World War II, in order to conceal what was then top-secret information. During the Battle of Britain, the outnumbered Royal Air Force had, time and again, repelled wave after wave of nighttime Luftwaffe bomber raids, seemingly being able sense when and where the raids would materialize.

The reason for this was the early detection network set up by the British, using the relatively new Radio Detection and Rangefinding (better known today as radar) technology. Of course, it wouldn't do to attribute the RAF's uncanny interceptions to this classified technology.

The solution? It was leaked to the press that RAF pilots and spotters were put on a carrot-rich diet, which improved their night vision and enabled them to spot German bombers, even in almost pitch-darkness.
